New Volvo Cars

Volvo was started by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson while having a meal of crayfish together in 1924. The idea was to build a vehicle more suited to the Scandinavian climate that utilized high-quality Swedish steel than the American imports. Their first car, the Jakob, reached production just three years later. By 1932, the company was profitable making 900 cars a year. In 1964, a new factory was built with Swedish Government backing at Torslanda, and opened by King Gustav Adolf. By 1983, output had reached five million cars. Today, the Volvo lineup includes the convertible C70, S40, S60, S80, V50, V70, XC70 and the XC90.
