Gottlieb Daimler’s ambition of motorized success on land, water and air is embodied in the star logo that was part of his company in 1910. By 1925, the company merged with Benz et Cie, and a few years later the name Mercedes was adopted as a result of businessman Emil Jellinek insistence on his customized race cars to carry his daughter’s name. The Spanish girl’s name for mercy brought a sense of irony to the racer who mostly won all the events he entered. During the 1920s, Ferdinand Porsche joined the company and was the engineer behind the development of the kompressor supercharger. With fine tuning, the engine generated 160 horsepower, with a top speed of 95.5 mph, making the Mercedes-Benz K, the fastest production car in the world prior to the World War II. Post-war cars that emerged, such as the Gullwing 300SL had to reintroduce the marquee to the sporting world. In the decades that followed the company crafted cutting edge technology in its use of anti-lock brakes, and a host of other innovations.
