In 1983, Toyota Chairman Eiji Toyoda declared it was time to create a luxury vehicle that challenged the best in the world. The plan called for the company to build cars that offered more style, power, safety, comfort, elegance and excellent customer satisfaction to compete with the German, British and American luxury brands. The term Lexus was coined – a combination of two words: luxury and elegance. By 1985, the first LS 400 prototype was built. It featured a unique design that featured no major components with any other Toyota vehicle, and in 1989, after 60 revisions, it was launched at both the Detroit, and LA auto shows. Within a year, the car won the highest marks from J.D. Power’s survey of customer satisfaction. In 1999, the company celebrated the sale of 1,000,000 vehicles in the USA. Today, the Lexus lineup includes the ES330, GS430/470, GX470, IS250/350, LS430, LX470, RX330, the RX400h, and the convertible SC430.
